Many animals are good at hiding signs of something wrong, so subtle changes in their health or behavior might be overlooked without preventive care.
At Lithonia Animal Hospital, P.C., our treatment philosophy is aimed at prevention with early diagnosis and treatment. We would love to partner with you in helping your pet live a long, happy, and healthy life.
Pets cannot tell us how they feel. Our wellness exams are preventative in helping your pet stay healthy and enjoy a quality life. We recommend regular exams for your pet, which include nose-to-tail evaluations and age-appropriate wellness assessments.
Why should you vaccinate your pet? Vaccinations are very important for young pets when their immune systems are still developing.
Vaccines protect against many viral and bacterial infections in pets. Our vets provide vaccination education and discuss our vaccine schedule, which helps to keep your pet healthy.
Do you have a new puppy or kitten? Congratulations! Once settled, it’s a good idea to schedule an initial exam for your new family member to learn the basics and to make sure your new pet gets off to a healthy start!
We can discuss spaying or neutering, microchipping, and how to make sure your new friend gets all the vitamins and minerals they need.
Is your pet experiencing bad breath or excessive drooling? Just like humans, pets need regular dental care and cleanings. Good dental care plays a crucial role in the quality of your pet's life.
Dental disease is the most common medical problem in pets and can lead to pain, tooth loss, and generalized disease. We offer routine dental care, including exams, x-rays, teeth cleaning, and more.
Our doctors and staff are here to help you make informed nutrition choices for your pet. From picking a brand to what ingredients your pet needs to how much to feed — we are here to help.
We offer assistance with special dietary needs, weight loss or gain, age-related nutrition, and nutrition for various medical conditions. Our nutritional counseling services can help you accomplish your goals and keep your pet healthy.
Itching, scratching, and hot spots are all signs of allergies and skin conditions in pets. Just like humans, pets can be sensitive to irritants that cause them distress.
Our team will diagnose and offer treatment for pets with skin-related problems, including parasites, allergies, rashes, infections, hair loss, and more. When left untreated, some of these conditions can become serious health concerns.
Flea, tick, heartworm, and other parasite prevention is a year-round job and necessary for keeping your pet safe and healthy. Many parasites cause severe illness or even death if left untreated. Unfortunately, some pet owners are unaware of their pet's infection, so prevention is essential.
Should I microchip my pet? Every year, thousands of pets go missing. Even the most responsible pet owners experience broken leashes, escape artists, and thefts. Microchipping is a safe, effective, and permanent way to identify your pet if lost or stolen.
As pets enter their senior years and final stages of life, they require specialized care and age-specific testing to stay healthy and extend longevity. As your pet ages, our vets can help you identify early warning signs and take the necessary precautions to keep your senior pet healthy and happy.
As a pet owner, you might recognize when your pet is not feeling well. But it’s difficult to determine why.
Our staff is committed to helping you get a complete picture of your pet’s health through laboratory and diagnostic testing.
Although we handle most of your pet’s medical and surgical needs in-house, we occasionally refer patients to other veterinarians or specialty clinics when advanced training or equipment is beneficial.
Below you will find a list of treatments that we currently offer in-house.
Do you need advice regarding the redirection of unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling, or aggression? We offer solutions for a variety of behavioral issues that pet owners face. Behavioral problems can be challenging and frustrating for both pets and pet owners. It is our goal to work with you towards a solution.
Internal medicine veterinarians are qualified to perform advanced diagnostic services and create treatment plans for illnesses related to the internal body systems of animals. Our team will help diagnose and treat conditions of the GI system, kidneys, liver, heart, nervous system, endocrine glands, bladder, and respiratory systems. We also treat cancers, blood disorders, immune deficiencies, and infectious diseases.
When it comes to orthopedic care, prevention, detection, and treatment of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments are an important and vital part of keeping your pet up, running, and healthy. In addition to a thorough physical exam, we use laboratory tests and radiological findings to determine the cause of your pet’s pain and/or the extent of their injury or illness.
If you are concerned about your pet’s eyes or vision, we can help. Our ophthalmology team diagnoses and treats a variety of ophthalmological issues, including but not limited to, dry eyes, cataracts, corneal infection or trauma, and glaucoma. It is important to report any changes in your pet’s eyes or vision during your routine veterinary visits.
Whether a pet has a congenital heart condition or a cardiology issue that has developed over time, diagnosing a heart condition early can allow your pet to lead a long, healthy life and avoid heart failure. Call us if your pet starts breathing rapidly or coughing, loses his or her appetite, tires easily, seems weak, or has trouble exercising.
A cancer diagnosis for your pet can be scary. Our veterinarians want you to know there are more treatment options available now than in the past. We have years of advanced study and experience in treating pet cancers and almost every pet can be helped to some degree. For some pets, that may mean a cure; for others, we focus on palliative treatments that provide an improved quality of life.
The endocrine glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, and testes. Each of these glands secretes a type of hormone into the bloodstream that regulates various body systems. These serious, potentially life-threatening conditions are much more manageable when caught early, allowing us to begin proper treatment.
Our doctors work with you to determine the cause of pain and teach you how to recognize pain in your pet. Acute or chronic pain affects your pet’s ability to physically function and can also have a detrimental effect on their well-being and state-of-mind. Pain management is one of our primary considerations when treating a pet for any medical condition.
Laser therapy is often used in conjunction with physical therapy or rehab and is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and aid in healing. Laser therapy is good for post-surgical patients, chronic arthritis, skin conditions, muscle strains and sprains, joint or disc disease, wounds, bites and burns.
Blood transfusion (including transfusion of blood products, like plasma) is a critically important service that can mean the difference between life and death for your pet. All blood is carefully screened for safety, handled carefully to ensure delivery of healthy cells, and administered by experienced professionals. Our staff has been extensively trained and will handle your pet with care and compassion.
Animal reproduction and breeding is a serious business. A vital component of a quality breeding program is education, which ensures that you are fully aware of the issues that may arise to guarantee the safety and health of your male or female dog or cat, and their offspring. Our services include breeding management, ovulation timing, artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, and cesarean deliveries.
Hip dysplasia is a common condition that affects dogs and can cause debilitating and painful conditions for your pet. OFA Hip & Elbow evaluation/certification helps pet owners and breeders to evaluate the hip joint before breeding. We strongly recommend OFA Hip & Elbow certification before breeding a female, before the purchase of a puppy, and/or to evaluate your pet’s hip condition.
Deciding when your pet may need hospice care or euthanasia is a very personal and private decision, but that doesn’t mean you have to make this difficult choice on your own. If you are worried you have a sick, elderly, or terminally ill pet that is suffering, call us to learn how we can help.
Exotic pets include small mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates. We recommend that all newly acquired exotic pets be kept separate from your other pets for one month after purchase. They should also receive an initial health evaluation by your veterinarian prior to introduction to your other pets. We offer a wide array of wellness services for exotic pets.
Pocket pets refer to smaller household pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils, and hedgehogs. Each pet is different and requires different care. We will guide you in your pet’s care, provide helpful tips for keeping your pet safe and we offer treatments (such as vaccination, parasite screening, and spay/neuter) to keep your pet healthy.
Spaying or neutering your pet is an important decision for pet owners. Removing the male or female reproductive organs prevents unwanted pregnancies and reproductive cancers from threatening your pet's life. We offer spay and neuter surgery as part of your pet's preventative wellness care.
Known as the ACL in humans, CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) repair is one of the most common orthopedic surgeries performed. Cruciate ligament tears in a dog’s knee are quite common. Tearing this ligament causes instability in the knee joint, leading to abnormal movement and debilitating arthritis if left untreated.
We take anesthesia cases very seriously and utilize a safe, multi-modal approach for each animal we treat. We use a combination of pre-op assessments, modern anesthetic agents, and the latest anesthetic monitoring equipment to keep your pet safe and the risks of surgery low. Our recovering pet patients have fewer side effects, pain relief, and faster postoperative recovery.
Family pets need regular dental checkups to ensure good oral health. But even with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings, your pet may require a dental extraction as they age. If your pet needs dental surgery or dental cleaning, we administer anesthesia to allow for comprehensive access to the teeth, gums, and oral tissues. Anesthesia makes it possible to perform dental procedures with less stress and pain for your pet.
Our veterinarians are experienced in various soft tissue pet surgeries, the most routinely performed procedures being spay/neuters and mass/tumor removals. Other veterinary soft tissue surgeries include intestinal foreign body removal, laceration and wound repair, eye surgery, specialized surgeries, perineal ureterotomy, mastectomy, and splenectomy.
At Lithonia Animal Hospital, P.C. we understand that you are probably nervous about submitting your pet to any type of surgical procedure.
Our compassionate and caring professionals monitor your pet before, during, and after surgery and take exceptional care to ensure your pet’s safety and complete recovery.
What to Expect:
Most surgery patients will need to be admitted by 8:00 am unless instructed otherwise by their veterinarian. Our team will confirm the procedure(s) being done, go over the treatment plan, have you fill out the Surgery/Anesthesia Consent Form, and make sure we have good phone numbers where we can reach you during the day. We typically discharge our surgery patients before 6 pm, one of our team members will call you after your pet is awake to give you an exact time and update you on how your pet did. This allows the doctor time to discuss any further pertinent details about the procedure that was performed and answer any questions you may have.
Although masses are most common in older pets, all tumorous growths should be evaluated by one of our skilled professionals. Your pet’s doctor will utilize key diagnostic processes to identify the cause of the mass and explain the possible treatment options with you. Pet mass removals are usually performed under general anesthesia, allowing us to remove the entire area in question effectively and painlessly.
We routinely perform orthopedic surgeries, which are procedures related to bones and joints. Common orthopedic pet surgeries include bone fracture repair, cruciate ligament repair, extracapsular and TPLO techniques, leg or toe amputation, patellar luxation repair, and surgeries to treat hip dysplasia, including femoral head ostectomy (FHO).
